Author Jason Irby to Present Annual Arkansas Heritage of Black History Month Celebration 2019

On Saturday, February 23, 2019, Jason Irby will present the Fourth Annual Arkansas Heritage Celebration of Black History.  This year’s theme is The Integrators.

Scheduled to make presentations are representatives from the following Arkansas high schools:

  • Students from L. W. Sullivan High School integrated into Morrilton High School
  • Students from J. S. Walker High School integrated into Willie K. Hocker High School
  • Students from Howard County High School integrated into Saratoga High School

Legend Among Us Honorees

Lawrence Gupton, Jr., the first African-American to play basketball for the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (formerly Little Rock University), will be presented with a Legend Among Us award.

Coach Oliver Elders, former United States Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders, and former Little Rock Mayor Lottie H. Shackelford, will also receive Legend Among Us awards for pioneering work in Arkansas Heritage.

Many other presentations and activities are scheduled for the 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. event on Saturday, February 23, 2019, at the Hillary Rodham Clinton Children’s Library and Learning Center.

Prizes for student participation in the Arkansas Heritage of Black History Art Contest will be a feature of this year’s program.
