COMMUNITY JOINS LOCAL AUTHOR IN GIVING BACK TO HOMETOWN AT ARKANSAS FLAG MEMORIAL CEREMONY

Author Jason Irby of North Little Rock along with the Wabbaseka Memorial Committee will host the “Arkansas Flag 101” and Arkansas Flag/Wabbaseka Memorial Completion Ceremony to be held at Wabbaseka City Park in Wabbaseka, Arkansas on Wednesday, February 26, 2014 beginning at 9:30 A.M. The memorial is the concept of author Jason Irby who grew up and attended schools in Wabbaseka, as well as attended the Upward Bound Program at UAPB during the early 1980’s.

“Giving back to my hometown and community has always been a goal in my life and UAPB has always been an icon in our community (Wabbaseka), region and nation”, says Irby. “I am proud that UAPB and our surrounding communities have joined to lift a fading small town surrounded by agriculture that I call home.”

9-4-14

UAPB is the major university closest to Wabbaseka and its Agriculture, Art and ROTC departments will participate.  The UAPB Art Department is assisting in designing and developing information/exhibit panels for the memorial. The Agriculture and ROTC Departments will participate and exhibit at the commemoration ceremony.

A product of the University of Arkansas system, Irby received his Bachelors and Masters (School of Mass Communication) degrees from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. He has authored a series of publications entitled Love Within Life which include several references to his life in and admiration of Arkansas’ resources, beauty and people.

Special guest will include the LRAFB and Arkansas National Guard Units. The Navy Band (Blues City Brass Quintet) from Millington, TN will perform a variety of musical styles.

Dear Friends,

The Wabbaseka Memorial Committee and I joyfully invite you all to celebrate with us “Arkansas Flag 101” and Arkansas Flag/ Wabbaseka Memorial Plaza Completion Ceremony to be held February 26, 2014, at 10:00 AM.  This historical event commemorates the 101st year anniversary of the official adoption of Arkansas’ flag.  We are honoring Arkansas’ flag, Ms. Willie K. Hocker (flag designer from Wabbaseka) and the Navy’s USS Arkansas.   We are also celebrating the completion of another phase at the memorial plaza.   Last February on the 26th, we celebrated the official 100th year adoption date of Arkansas’ Flag and conducted a groundbreaking ceremony for the memorial plaza.

We ended 2013’s year of celebration by dedicating and revealing the Arkansas Flag/Wabbaseka Memorial site in Wabbaseka City Park, Wabbaseka, Arkansas.  We followed in the footsteps and path of history that the first flag and its creator/supporters blazed across Arkansas 100 years ago.  Wabbaseka now has a beautiful flag and veterans memorial.   It would be an honor to have you join us in Wabbaseka for another historical occasion.

Theme:  The Arkansas Diamond Endures

Tentative Schedule:

  • Ceremony beginning in Wabbaseka City Park on February 26, 2014, at 10:00 AM with “Raising Of The Flags” by Color Guards.
  • Interlude starts at 9:30 AM
  • Detailed program will be provided in the coming days – guest, speakers and activities
